Taekwondo

Taekwondo, literally translated, is the Martial Art of Kicking and Punching.  It was developed in Korea over 2,000 years ago as a means of defending the country against invaders.  Paintings have been found in Southern Korea depicting early tournaments (left).  There are also statues depicting warriors in ancient Buddhist Temples in the same areas (right).

In modern times, it has become a popular activity for people of all ages.  It benefits practioners physically as well as mentally.  It is also, as of the 2000 Olympics, officially the only kick punch martial art in the Olympics.

Taekwondo is known for its powerful spinning and turning kicks.  Mostly for its kicking, which is the predominant strike used.  It is trained hand in hand with Hapkido in the IBBF.
